Nagpur was famous for its red light area called Ganga-Jamuna. From the era of the Bhonsale rulers to modern times, this area has aged more than 200 years. For many years, this red light area in Nagpur stood as one of the most recognised zones for adult service offers in the city. It was the only place for the call girls in Nagpur. This is situated in the Itwari area.

Ganga-Jamuna was closed by the authorities some years ago. Due to public health, law and morality concerns, the police closed it down.  Ganga Jamuna was home to many underprivileged women. Many women had children.

The Crackdown on the Red Light Area in Nagpur

In August 2021, Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar ordered the closure of the red-light district. He cited the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act of 1956, which bans brothels within 200 metres of public places. Since the area had temples, a mosque, schools, and civic offices, the police had strong legal grounds.

On August 11, police barricaded 15 of the 16 entry points, imposed Section 144 to ban gatherings, and blocked outsiders, including clients, from entering. Within days, they sealed ten of the twelve main brothels. Kumar warned that they would jail anyone caught engaging in prostitution.

Life in the Ganga-Jamuna

Next, we are going to understand how life was on the Ganga-Jamuna. Keep reading for a better understanding. We have divided it into some parts to make it easy for you.

Sex Area in Nagpur

1. The Structure of the Ganga Jamuna Community

Ganga Jamuna’s red-light operations had around two hundred small buildings along its narrow lanes. Each building usually had one or more gharwalis (madams) who managed four or five sex workers per house. The gharwalis not only managed but also cared for the women. Many were retired sex workers who provided shelter, basic needs, and protection from aggressive clients, criminals, and police harassment.

In return, they took a large share of the women’s earnings, which brothel owners, agents, and other partners further divided.

2. Life in the Lanes

Every evening, neon lights lit up above brothel doors. Women stood there and waited for their clients. They asked the passersby to stop and enjoy the service. Some of them negotiated terms behind the doors and sometimes openly. This could irritate the nearby families and shopkeepers.  Women here mostly came from an impoverished background.

Many of them migrated from the villages to have better chances of survival. Some were kidnapped and trafficked, and many of them joined the field because it has better income opportunities than other labour jobs.

3. Mothers at Work

More than half of brothel madams lived with their children on the premises. Many younger call girls raised infants or toddlers in the same small rooms where they give adult services. Mothers often improvised childcare. Children played in courtyards or small rooms while their mothers met clients. Some brothels tried to keep separate areas for children, but space did not allow it.

At that time, people had to go to the local adult entertainment zone to find a companion. Today,  lonely people of Nagpur search keywords like escort service in Nagpur on the internet to find a friend.

4. Children and Marginalisation

Children in the Ganga-Jamuna red light area in Nagpur face heavy social and legal barriers. According to a study, most of the children did not know who their father was. They did not have any documents to seek the information. This created a problem for the children to get admission in schools and have access to government schemes. Social stigma made things worse.

Many schools refused children labelled “illegitimate.” Poverty, abuse, and disease deepened their isolation. If a child gets admission in school, then their peers would bully them for their identity.

5. Public Health Efforts

Some NGOs came to the forefront to help these women and their children. The NGOs arranged health care camps for them and provided sex education. They conducted condom distribution drives in the area to safeguard the call girls from STDs.

NGOs and the Indian Red Cross Society actively ran clinics and awareness drives in the Ganga-Jamuna. They provided free HIV tests, distributed condoms, and offered counselling.

After this, changes could be seen. Most of the women went for regular HIV testing. This approach helped reduce the HIV cases among the call girls.

6. Economic Significance

The escorts of Ganga-Jamuna drove a major underground economy in Nagpur. Social workers estimated their annual revenue in millions. The earnings supported not only call girls workers, and gharwalis but also landlords, shopkeepers, street vendors, rickshaw drivers, and other locals. This red light area in Nagpur had thousands of girls working in the brothels. Every day, each woman dealt with approximately 10 clients.

Local Reactions to the Crackdown

Nearby residents and political leaders, including a local councillor, praised the move. They believed it would reduce crime and “immoral activity.  The political leaders warned the women and advised them to find other jobs. Nobody has given a second thought about how these women live their lives.

NGOs and public health advocates, however, raised concerns. They argued that dispersing sex workers would push them into hidden, unsafe spaces where HIV prevention and violence protection would become harder.

The Policy Dilemma

The Ganga Jamuna case showed the tension between law enforcement and moral activism. On one hand, due to the law, they shut the brothels near public places. On the other hand, they dispersed the workers, weakened public health outreach and left women and children with higher chances of danger.

The authorities could not think beyond the policy. They almost imprisoned the women for a while and made them think about their life choices.

Aftermath and the Innovation of the Online Platforms

Over the following year, many younger call girls moved quietly to other cities or shifted to work in spas and massage parlours. The women suffered for a while until the online platform showed up. Online platforms such as classified ads sites for adult services help these women to stand up again. A platform such as Royal Escort Club provides these call girls a safe space to restart their lives in Nagpur or wherever they are.

The royal escort club is available for all the Call Girls India. Some women who went to their home state created a profile on the site from there only and started the work.

The Bottom Line

For decades, Ganga Jamuna functioned as a neighbourhood with its own systems of work and survival. Being a very old and the only red light area in Nagpur, it has historical importance. Thousands of women lived there, cried there, and laughed there. The crackdown dismantled that system almost overnight. Some welcomed the change, while others now faced uncertainty and danger before the arrival of the online platforms.

Royal Escort Club came into the limelight just after the crackdown. Now the escorts are getting better opportunities to shine because of the site.
